Christmas Decorating Themes – How to Transform Your Home Into a White Christmas Wonderland
Are you dreaming of a white Christmas? No matter where you live, Christmas conjures up images of fluffy white snow, drifting past the windows and blanketing the yard. But you don’t have to go outside, or live in the arctic, to bring a winter wonderland into your home for Christmas. You can easily bring a little winter magic indoors by using white as your main decorating theme throughout your house.
Think an all-white theme is boring and cold? Well, you’re absolutely right! A true winter wonderland has a lot of white, but think about the outside…there are shades of blue in the snow, hints of red berries on the tree branches, silvery sparkles from the ice. When you’re creating a white Christmas indoors, think of all the textures, glimmer, and splashes of color that greet you on you winter walks. That’s what you will use to break up all the white, and create visual interest.
Basically, think of your winter color palette like so: white as the base, then silver, gold, soft blues and a splash of red here and there for added warmth. Mix up your textures…some soft, fluffy items along with some silky pieces and even some rough textured pieces here and there call to mind the varied textures found in nature. Add sparkle with glittery items, shiny ornaments, white lights and glass.
Now that you’ve got the basic idea down, let’s look at creating a winter wonderland feature with the main Christmas decorative focal point…your Christmas tree.
You can use spray snow on your tree, but it’s optional. If you decide to use it, make sure you spray it on before you add any other decorations to the tree. I prefer a light dusting, but you can add more if you prefer a really wintery look. Either way, make sure you leave enough green poking out so that it looks like a tree you’ve just brought in from outside.
Next, add strings of clear and/or white lights. For interest, add at least one string of lights that twinkle. Then, hang ornaments that are white, silver, or clear. Glass ornaments, snowflakes, and icicles are all good choices.
Now, instead of tinsel, sweep the tree with ribbon. You can use white ribbon trimmed with silver or gold, or a light blue ribbon to call to mind the subtle shades of blue you see in winter landscapes. Tuck the ribbon in the branches.
An optional touch, but one that really brings sparkle to the tree, is clear or silver beads. Wrap these as you did the ribbon. The lights will catch the beads nicely and add a real twinkle to the tree…just like they were beads of ice.
Now, add some warmth to the tree with a splash of color. Sprays of red berries here and there look beautiful, and add to the natural feel of a winter tree. You can also choose bird ornaments in red, candy canes…use your imagination. Finally, add a white topper…a sparkly snowflake, a glowing white angel, or whatever you like to have siting at the top of your tree.
From here, you can take this winter wonderland Christmas theme throughout your home…and have a white Christmas, wherever you live!
